    The latest edition of Coffee Bar Tuesday, hosted by MuYI HUB, brought together 13 participants, marking an increase in attendance from the previous session. The discussion focused on one of the most pressing local political conversations: the race for the next Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Kwa Reuben Ward.

    With more individuals declaring interest in the seat almost every week, participants reflected on the growing list of aspirants and explored what qualities the community should prioritize when choosing its next representative.

    A Crowded Race with Many Questions

    The discussion began by acknowledging that it is becoming increasingly difficult to establish the exact number of people intending to contest the Kwa Reuben MCA seat. New declarations continue to emerge, creating uncertainty among residents about who is seriously seeking the position.

    Participants observed that while many individuals have expressed interest, there is growing concern that some aspirants may not have demonstrated meaningful engagement or service within the community prior to declaring their candidacy. Several participants felt that public office should not merely be viewed as an attractive political opportunity but as a responsibility that requires proven commitment to the people.

    Learning from the Current Leadership

    The conversation naturally shifted to reflecting on the current leadership of the ward.

    Participants expressed disappointment with what they described as unmet expectations from the current MCA. They argued that the perceived shortcomings of the current leadership have contributed to increased interest in the seat, attracting a wide range of aspirants.

    One key point of consensus was that being born in Kwa Reuben or having lived in the area for many years should not, on its own, qualify someone for leadership. While local knowledge is important, participants argued that effective leadership requires much more than residency.

    The discussion emphasized that understanding community challenges, engaging residents consistently, and advocating effectively for local needs are qualities that matter more than simply having long-standing ties to the area.

    What Should the Next MCA Look Like?

    Rather than focusing on personalities, much of the discussion centered on identifying the qualities residents would like to see in the next MCA.

    Participants agreed that the community needs a leader who:

    • Has a demonstrated track record of serving the community.
    • Has consistently stood with residents during times of crisis and challenge.
    • Is accessible and accountable to the people.
    • Can confidently represent Kwa Reuben’s interests in the Nairobi County Assembly.
    • Is capable of articulating community concerns effectively during debates and committee sessions.
    • Can understand, interpret, and scrutinize county budgets, legislation, and policy proposals.

    Although formal education was not viewed as the most important qualification, participants agreed that the ability to read, analyse, and interpret budgets and bills is essential for anyone seeking to represent the ward effectively.

    As one participant summarized:

    “Whoever we elect becomes an average reflection of our community.”

    The statement sparked further discussion about the importance of electing leaders who can inspire confidence both within Kwa Reuben and at the county level.

    The Need for a Community Dialogue with All Aspirants

    While participants did not settle on a definitive formula for selecting the next MCA, one practical proposal received broad support.

    The group agreed that organizing a community forum bringing together all aspiring MCA candidates would provide residents with an opportunity to hear directly from each candidate, compare their ideas, ask questions, and evaluate their leadership qualities before making informed decisions.

    Such a platform, participants noted, would strengthen accountability and encourage issue-based politics rather than personality-driven campaigns.

    Other Matters Discussed

    Global Day to Fight Inequality

    The session also received an update on preparations for the upcoming Global Day to Fight Inequality, scheduled for 4th July 2026.

    Participants were informed that the Executive Director of Mukuru Youth Initiative (MuYI) has been entrusted with coordinating the Fight Inequality Alliance – Nairobi Chapter and will lead the city’s preparations for the global day of action.

    Everyone was invited to participate, with further communication and details to be shared in the coming days.

    June 25th Gen Z Commemoration

    The meeting also discussed the planned June 25th Gen Z Commemoration.

    Participants acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the planned activities and the broader public environment. Rather than taking a collective position, the group respected individual choice, agreeing that every participant should make their own personal decision on whether or not to attend the commemorative activities.

    The discussion reaffirmed the importance of respecting diverse views while encouraging peaceful civic participation.

    Building a Culture of Civic Dialogue

    Coffee Bar Tuesday continues to provide an open and respectful platform where residents can engage in meaningful conversations about governance, leadership, and community development.

    As Kwa Reuben prepares for the 2027 General Election, conversations such as these are helping residents move beyond campaign promises and focus on the qualities, values, and competence they expect from those seeking public office.

    Coffee Bar:The State of the Gen Z Movement and Kenya’s Political Future

    The Coffee Bar Conversation held at The MuYi Hub brought together 12 participants (4 females and 8 males) for an engaging discussion on the current state of the Gen Z movement, civic participation, and leadership in Kenya.

    Participants observed that there is a growing perception that the Gen Z movement has lost momentum. However, the discussion revealed a different perspective. Many participants argued that the movement remains active but has changed in form. They noted that public participation is often measured by the number of people on the streets, yet the current environment has become more challenging due to the emergence of violent groups and goons who have increasingly taken over protest spaces.

    Unlike previous demonstrations where protesters mainly faced law enforcement, participants expressed concern that attending street protests now exposes individuals to risks of robbery, assault, and other forms of harm from fellow citizens. This has led many young people to prioritize their personal safety and avoid physically joining demonstrations, even when they continue to support the movement’s objectives.

    The conversation also highlighted widespread dissatisfaction with leadership across all levels of government, from Members of County Assembly (MCAs) to the Presidency. Participants pointed to persistent governance challenges and emphasized the urgent need for accountable, responsive, and people-centered leadership.

    Despite these concerns, the discussion remained hopeful. Participants agreed that significant progress has already been achieved through the 2024 and 2025 protests. They noted that these movements have contributed to a more politically aware and informed citizenry, particularly among young people. The increased public engagement in governance issues, accountability, and civic education was cited as evidence of this growing consciousness.

    A key example discussed was the recent “Tuko Kadi” campaign, which reportedly facilitated the registration of over 2.6 million young voters. Participants viewed this as a strong indication that young people remain committed to shaping Kenya’s future and are preparing to influence the outcome of the 2027 General Election.

    There was a shared view that the Gen Z movement has not died but has become fragmented across different political and social interests. Nevertheless, participants believed that the achievements made so far, combined with the willingness of young people to unite around common goals, will become increasingly evident as the country approaches the 2027 elections.

    Coffee Bar: ‘Blood Parliament Documentary’ Screening and Reflection — When the Silence Felt Too Loud

    On Tuesday evening, the room was quiet — not because there was nothing to say, but because we had just witnessed something that left us shaken. As the lights dimmed and the BBC Africa Eye documentary “Blood Parliament” played, the space at Coffee Bar transformed from a casual gathering to a collective reflection. A documentary meant to inform became a mirror. And no one left the same.

    The film took us back to June 25th, 2024 — a day burned into memory. The chants, the defiance, the blood. Students, shopkeepers, Sunday school teachers — ordinary Kenyans whose lives were cut short in a moment meant to redefine democracy.

    As the credits rolled, the conversation started. Slowly. Then all at once.

    Many participants confessed that watching the documentary reopened emotional wounds. Some shared that it brought back haunting memories of being on the ground during the protests. “It could have been me,” one said. Others sat in silence until they could finally say, “It still hurts.”

    Some felt the documentary succeeded in capturing the emotional weight of the moment, but lacked a solid call to action. Names like Rex Masai were painfully absent. “Where was the mention of those who became the faces of this revolution?” someone asked. “How do you spark a movement and then leave out its symbols?”

    A few felt the timing was right — a powerful reminder ahead of a crucial election cycle. But others felt it came too late, too clean, too… safe. “The revolution already happened. Where was BBC when the fire was burning hottest?”

    There were also sharp critiques of accessibility and reach. With most grassroots communities lacking smartphones or stable internet, some argued that the people most affected by the protest and its fallout may never even see the documentary. “It won’t reach the mama mboga who lost her son. It won’t reach the youth still healing in silence.”

    One participant boldly said what many had only implied: “At the end of the day, BBC is a business. They’re selling stories. Not justice.” Others questioned the choice of voices in the film. Why were some individuals featured who hadn’t been visible on the frontlines? Why weren’t the families of the deceased given space to speak?

    The fear was real. “I don’t think I’d march again,” one Gen Z participant said quietly. “This time, I watched the ambulances take away politicians while the wounded bled out. What’s the point?”

    The room was heavy. But it wasn’t hopeless.

    The conversation closed with a shared truth: our systems have failed us. The political class — regardless of side — has united in survival, not service. But so have we. In anger. In truth. In hope.

    Someone said it best: “Come 2027, we drain the swamp.”

    Coffee Bar isn’t about answers. It’s about awakening. And this week, we woke up to a reality many wanted to forget. Now that we remember, the real work begins.

    Coffee Bar: The Youth, Governance, and the Politics of Handshakes

    At MuYI, we believe that young people must have a voice in governance and advocacy. Our Coffee Bar sessions create a platform where the community, especially the youth, can engage in real conversations about governance, leadership, and civic participation. On February 25, 2025, we gathered once again at MuYI Hub to dissect one of Kenya’s most controversial political moves—the recent Raila-Ruto handshake. But was it really about unity, or just another backroom deal that left Kenyans out?

    Politics of Handshakes: Who Really Benefits?

    Kenyan politics is a cycle of deals made behind closed doors, leaving the people with promises but little action. The handshake between Raila Odinga and President William Ruto has reignited the debate: Is it about national unity, or just another elite arrangement that safeguards political interests while sidelining ordinary Kenyans?

    In our discussion, many participants felt that these handshakes have historically been symbolic, rather than transformative. The lack of transparency and public participation in these high-level agreements raises concerns. If governance is truly for the people, then why are the people always the last to know?

    Gen Z Is Wide Awake: The Rise of Political Consciousness

    Unlike previous generations, today’s youth are no longer passive spectators. The streets are louder, the conversations sharper, and Gen Z is demanding accountability. This isn’t 2007, 2013, or 2018—young people today are equipped with information, mobilization tools, and the courage to challenge the status quo. The Coffee Bar session made it clear that the old tricks of silencing dissent through political deals will no longer work.

    Real Representation: Who Speaks for the Youth?

    One of the most heated discussions of the session was about youth representation in governance. Time and again, the government parades handpicked youth leaders who do not represent the struggles and aspirations of young Kenyans. The system amplifies chaos and distractions while sidelining young people with real solutions.

    At MuYI, we continue to push for meaningful engagement of youth in decision-making processes. It is not enough to have young faces in government; we need leaders who will stand up for the community and challenge exploitative systems.

    Degrees vs. Leadership: Are We Being Gaslit?

    Another thought-provoking discussion centered on education and leadership. The Coffee Bar audience questioned the narrative that a degree alone makes a great leader. When President Ruto dismissed critics by stating, “I have a PhD, so I shouldn’t be questioned,” was that leadership or intellectual gatekeeping?

    Education should empower, not silence people. The session concluded that leadership should be judged by actions and policies that benefit the people, not just academic qualifications.

    The persistent floods in Mukuru have caused significant displacement, loss of lives, and destruction of homes and infrastructure. Economic activities have also been severely disrupted. The situation is compounded by poor urban planning, inadequate drainage systems, and ongoing demolitions, which the government claims are necessary to remove structures encroaching on riparian land.

    Causes of Floods

    1. Heavy Rainfall: Intense and prolonged rains.
    2. Poor Drainage Systems: Inadequate infrastructure to manage excess water.
    3. Improper Urban Planning: Settlements in flood-prone areas.

This attempt was successfully resisted by the community, highlighting the importance of solidarity.
    • Media Attention: Mathare’s strong presence on social media and connections to international media, such as CNN reporter Larry Madowo, helped bring global attention to their plight. Mukuru, in contrast, has not received the same level of media focus.
    • Leadership and Responsibility: The discussion emphasized the need for Mukuru’s leaders to advocate more strongly for the community. Additionally, residents were urged to be responsible citizens, ensuring they contribute to solutions rather than problems.

    Do We Have Youth Safe Spaces?

    The conversations surrounding youth and their need for safe and social spaces has gained significance. With the rise of digital communication and the increasing importance of community engagement, the necessity of providing environments where young individuals can thrive, interact and feel secure has become paramount. With our weekly Coffee Bar Tuesday discussion being held on 2nd April 2024, it shed light on the multidimensional aspects of establishing such spaces and the potential benefits they can offer to both individuals and communities at large.

    A question was posed by the moderator to the participants to define a safe space. Participants defined a safe space as an environment where you can freely express yourself without fear of judgment or discrimination with many differing kinds of safe spaces that are there. Others pointed out that a safe space offers a sanctuary for individuals to explore their identities, share their experiences and seek support when needed. However, the dictionary defines a safe space as a place or environment in which a person or category of people can feel confident that they will not be exposed to discrimination, criticism, harassment, or any other emotional or physical harm.

    The discussion sparked an engaging dialogue with participants offering different views on their understanding of places they perceive as safe spaces such as churches, parks and other playing grounds.. A participant shared that his safe space is a club, it’s only in clubs that he feels safe and not judged. The issue of someone being a safe space also arose a lot of mixed reactions with many citing a person cannot and should not be a safe space for anyone.  For young people lacking social skills, a safe space is somewhere they can learn and practice new skills and receive constructive feedback.

    “A safe space is a place where you feel happy, not judged and at peace.” a participants said

    However, how many youth safe spaces do we have within our communities? Are they even in existence? The majority of participants were able to agree that we don’t have youth safe spaces within Mukuru where young people can walk in without being discriminated against and also feeling safe. MuYI Hub was also picked by some of the participants as a safe space for them. The coffee Bar Tuesday session was also picked as a safe space for many with many sharing that we don’t have a lot of spaces where one can share what they think or feel without being judged.

    Participants contributed that youth safe and social spaces for youth facilitate meaningful interactions and connections. This can happen through organized activities, community events, or casual gatherings. They further echoed that these spaces provide opportunities for young people to engage with their peers, build friendships, and form supportive networks. Such interactions are valuable for personal growth and development, as they allow individuals to broaden their perspectives, and learn from others.

    The session laid a solid foundation for understanding the significance of safe and social spaces for youth. The discussion surrounding safe and social spaces for youth underscores the importance of creating environments where young individuals can thrive, connect, and contribute positively to society. As we reflect on the insights shared and ideas exchanged during the discussion, it becomes evident that safe and social spaces play essential roles in shaping individuals. As young people, we must continue calling for better youth safe spaces and youth friendly services. Here, over steaming cups of coffee, discussions flourish, ideas are exchanged, and friendships are forged. Beyond its cozy ambiance, the Coffee Bar serves as a catalyst for community engagement and empowerment.
